CHICAGO — Designating the country's newest national monuments, President Barack Obama said Thursday that protecting places of natural beauty and historic significance is a truly American ideal.

Obama used the powers of the presidency to designate the Pullman National Monument in his hometown. The historic South Side neighborhood is where African-American railroad workers won a significant labor agreement in the 1930s that Obama said led to such protections as the 40-hour work week.

"So this site is at the heart of what would become America's labor movement," he said.

Pullman workers also played a role in the rise of the black middle class.

Obama began his career as a community organizer nearby and said returning to designate the monument "brings back a lot of good memories."

Before leaving Washington, Obama signed a proclamation in the Oval Office designating the Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado, a 21,000-acre site along the Arkansas River popular for whitewater rafting.

In Chicago, he also announced the designation of the Honouliuli National Monument in Hawaii, the site of an internment camp where Japanese-American citizens and prisoners of war were held during World War II.

"Conservation is a truly American ideal," Obama said. "The naturalists and industrialists and politicians who dreamt up our system of public lands and waters did so in the hope that by keeping these places, these special places in trust, places of incomparable beauty, places where our history was written, then future generations would value those places the same way as we do."

Obama also announced a new program to provide fourth-graders and their families with free admission to national parks for a year.

The Pullman designation honors the neighborhood built by industrialist George Pullman in the 19th century for workers to manufacture luxurious railroad sleeping cars. The 203-acre Pullman site includes factories and buildings associated with the Pullman Palace Car Company, which was founded in 1867 and employed thousands of workers to construct and provide service on railroad cars. While the company employed a mostly white workforce to manufacture railroad passenger cars, it also hired former slaves to serve as porters, waiters and maids on its iconic sleeping cars.

The railroad industry — Pullman in particular — was one of the largest employers of African-Americans in the United States by the early 1900s. Pullman workers played a major role in the rise of the black middle class and, through a labor agreement won by the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, they helped launch the civil rights movement of the 20th century, the White House said.

The new monuments bring to 16 the number of national monuments Obama has created or enlarged under the 1906 Antiquities Act, which grants presidents broad authority to protect historic or ecologically significant sites without congressional approval.

Former President George W. Bush created six national monuments, according to the NPCA, while former President Clinton created or enlarged 22. Since 1906, presidents have created 142 monuments.

Some Republicans have complained that Obama has abused his authority. They renewed their complaints over the newest designations, especially the Colorado site, the largest in size by far among the three new monuments.

Obama should "cut it out," said Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colorado. "He is not king. No more acting like King Barack."

Rep. Doug Lamborn, also a Colorado Republican, called the move a "top-down, big-government land grab by the president that disenfranchises the concerned citizens in the Browns Canyon region" in central Colorado, about 140 miles southwest of Denver.

Outdoors and wildlife groups applauded the Browns Canyon designation, saying it would allow future generations to enjoy its spectacular landscapes, world-class whitewater rafting, hunting and fishing.

Illinois senators, Democrat Richard Durbin and Republican Mark Kirk, hailed the Pullman designation.

"As Chicago's first national park, Pullman's 135 years of civil rights and industrial history will be protected and enjoyed for generations to come," Kirk said. He said the new park would bring up to 30,000 visitors and more than $40 million annually.

Apple didn't conceive the just-announced Apple Watch until after the company's founder and former-figurehead Steve Jobs had died, CEO Tim Cook revealed in an interview last night.

The announcement confirms that this is the first Apple device in the post-Jobs era.

It's the first new category of device the company has launched since the original iPad in 2010.

Speaking to ABC News moments after leaving the stage, Cook said: "We started working on it [Apple Watch] after his passing. But his DNA runs through all of us. And so the foundation that he left, you can see in all the things we're doing today, and the way we look at things.

"To me, it's not a big deal whether he personally say something or didn't, it's his thinking or his taste and his incredible perfectionist kind of view and his view that you should always innovate... all of those things are alive and well in the company and I think they always will be and I think his DNA will always be the foundation of Apple."

Cook added that Jobs would be proud of Apple right now.

"I think he would be incredibly proud to see the company that he left us – which is one of his greatest gifts to mankind was the company itself – be doing what it's doing today.

"I think he's smiling right now."

As anyone who tuned in to Tuesday night's Apple iPhone 6 announcement will tell you, the live stream was far from perfect. It frequently cut out, lost sound, and was beset by other assorted problems.

In response, and with no little degree of predictability, Samsung has today responded by mocking Apple's supposed incompetence in a whole series of adverts, starting with the live stream.

The ad shows two people in t-shirts very similar to those sported by staff at Apple's Genius Bar.

One is stuttering, and the other says: "You can't handle a live stream? You work in technology and you can't handle this?"

The next sees the two getting excited about a bigger screen, before realising that most phones have big screens nowadays.

The others mock Apple's lack of multitasking windows and stylus support, slow charging, and the fact that the Apple Watch relies on having an iPhone to work.

Obviously, Samsung comes up trumps in each of the ads. Unfortunately, the reviews don't quite bear this out.

Samsung's mobile devices always do well, but for this scribe they're not a patch on Apple's design-wise.

The removable backs of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 especially feel cheap and tacky.

The Galaxy S5 Mini also has some design flaws, most notably the fact you can feel it vibrate through the speaker on the back with every button press.

Samsung's earnings from its smartphones and mobile devices slid by a massive 62% in the last quarter of 2014, completing a miserable year for the Korean tech giant.

Although Samsung did not announce how many smartphones it sold between October and December, it did confirm that sales were down. Tablet sales also declined.

Samsung said it’s now looking to India and China to plug the gap and is planning a “diversified portfolio” to try and stymie competition from Xiaomi at the low end and Apple at the top end of the market.

The company will now focus more on its component business. However, that’s likely to aid competitors, especially Apple, which is said to be turning to Samsung to produce the silicon for the iPhone 6S, due out at the end of the year.

Samsung’s disastrous results come just after Apple posted a record profit of over £12 billion, driven by iPhone sales of 74.5 million.

It means that Samsung’s position as the world’s number-one smartphone-maker is now seriously under threat.

Samsung will likely to try and counter the threat with its forthcoming Galaxy S6 handset, expected to launch at Mobile World Congress in March.

Apple’s forthcoming iPad Pro was back in the headlines this week after a new rumour suggested Tim Cook and co were plotting a stylus to be sold alongside the super–sized tablet.

Now a rendering of the device, along with the stylus, has been built according to leaked schematics and other details released by supply-chain sources.

Created by 3D modeller Martin Hajek, the rendering of the iPad Pro has a larger bezel usually associated with older editions of Apple tablet. This fits neatly with the aforementioned leaked designs.

Hajek’s tablet has a slider for zooming in and out on screen and even a digital crown, as seen on the Apple Watch.

Such design tics are, however, not based on any concrete evidence.

The iPad Pro is expected to have a screen between 12.2 and 12.9–inches and is likely to hit shelves in the middle of 2015.

The Apple Watch will hit shelves in April, not March as has been previously rumoured. That’s the word straight from Apple CEO Tim Cook, who revealed the company’s plans during a conference call to discuss its record breaking quarterly results.

“Development for Apple Watch is right on schedule, and we expect to begin shipping in April.”

Cook went on to talk up the device, saying he used it every day and that he “can’t live life without it”.

However, he would not reveal any more details about the device, with price structure and battery usage still the biggest unknowns about the smart watch.

Apple will be hoping that the watch can match the runaway success of its latest iPhones. The Cupertino company posted record quarterly sales of 74.5 million iPhones between October and December, making £12 billion profit in the process. iPad sales, though, continue to slow and dropped to just over 21 million, from 26 million a year ago.

Apple has revealed it sold 74.5 million iPhones between October to December 2014, smashing its previous record by a colossal 46%.

During the same quarter in 2013, Apple shifted a then record 51 million iPhones. The latest figures also represent a rise on the traditionally slow July to September period, when Apple sold just over 39 million iPhones.

Sales have been driven by Apple’s introduction of larger models. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature screens which are significantly bigger than previous editions. The cheaper iPhone 5c is also thought to have fuelled growth.

During a conference call after the release of the results, Apple CEO Tim Cook would not be drawn on the exact breakdown of sales of each model. However, he did say the iPhone 6 was the most popular and that the last three months of 2014 saw more new iPhone customers than ever before. People switching from Android was also at its highest level in three years, he claimed.

Business Intelligence (BI) is a set of tools and techniques that process raw data into meaningful information and useful statistics for analytical purposes, that can help achieve greater and more beneficial results.

If we are to really understand the term 'business intelligence', perhaps this little piece from history will help. The term was originally put together by Richard Miller Devens in 1865 in his reference to Sri Henry Furnese, the prominent government financier in England between the years 1705 and 1710. Describing Furnese's business acumen and his accurate reading of monetary situations, Devens wrote that "he maintained a complete and perfect train of business intelligence". Here he was, of course, referring to the ability of Furnese to collect information, correlate the information and react accurately based on the information retrieved and collated. This is the essence of true "Business Intelligence".

In today's highly advanced and competitive business driven outlook, BI allows easy handling and interpretation of unstructured data or input of large amounts of information to help identify, create and develop strategic and long-term business opportunities while at the same plugging loopholes and strengthening systems. For commercial businesses world over, this is the key to implementing effective strategies based on the insights provided to gain competitive advantages in the market and gain long-standing stability.

The rumour mill is always whirring with gossip about next–gen updates, even months before devices hit the shelves.

So although these phones don’t exist officially yet, the increasing ability of tech fans to snare information about forthcoming kit means we already know a lot about next year’s hottest handsets.

Here’s our pick of the five devices we can’t wait to lay our hands on in 2015.

So much is riding on Samsung’s next generation Galaxy phone. The company had a disastrous 2014, seeing sales of its Galaxy phones slip as consumers wearied of countless variations and poor design compared to rivals.

The S6, codenamed ‘Project Zero’, will apparently feature the all–metal design so many consumers have been clamouring for, along with a beefed up camera said to feature a 20 megapixel processor.

The screen will be a quad HD number according to rumours, while there could even be a 128GB model in the offing. Samsung is going to have to pull out all the stops if it wants to get back on top.

Google has launched Android Lollipop for its Android Wear devices, bringing a string of new features to compatible smartwatches.

The big draw is the slew of watch faces now available for tech wrist-warmers running the search giant's operating system.

These can be installed from Google’s app emporium or the dedicated Android Wear app and include Pac Man, Plants and Zombies and Despicable Me versions, as well as other, less garish options for those not into games or kids' movies.

There are also new notification blocking tools, making it easier to stop being hassled by certain apps, while the platform now has easy access screen modes for when a room is light or dark.

The update comes as Apple continues work on its WatchKit software development kit, releasing the latest version to developers building apps for next year’s Apple Watch.

Images of what some claim is the frame for the next iPhone are doing the rounds online, officially marking the start of leaked-photo season for the eighth-generation Apple smartphone.

Sourced by Chinese site CTech and published first in The West by 9to5 Mac, the snaps depict what does indeed look like a very thin frame. That’s in line with existing speculation that the handset could come in at just 6mm thick and will be aptly marketed as the iPhone Air.

It’s also been noted that whatever it is we’re looking at appears rather longer than previous frames for iPhones. Naturally, that’s sparked excitable talk that this could be the year we finally get the much-rumoured iPhone phablet. But before things get too febrile, it’s worth noting that although CTech has hosted some legit leaks in the past, this snap is surely rather too blurry and indistinct to read very much into.

Whispers of a larger iPhone with a display that approaches the expansive dimensions of bigger Android phones was rife even before the arrival of the iPhone 5S last year.

To the disappointment of a large proportion of tech fans, in the event Apple opted to retain the iPhone 5’s four-inch screen instead.

Rumours around a super-slim model only surfaced recently. But assuming the putative 6mm dimensions are correct, the iPhone Air could come in at half as thick as the iPhone 3GS and a full 1.7mm thinner than the 5S.

Amazon has denied claims it will be offering a free smartphone, killing off a welter of recent rumours suggesting the online retailer is plotting to offer a device gratis to customers.

Speaking to former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin, the company said: “We have no plans to offer a phone this year, and if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free.”

The statement also kills any gossip about Jeff Bezos and co releasing a handset in 2013 to compete with Apple and Google.

The company has been widely believed to be working on a smartphone for aeons now, although a release date is now unclear.

What an Amazon phone would look like and how much it will retail for is once again a source of mystery.

Ad-supported models have been mooted, as have free devices for Amazon Prime subscribers.

A question also remains over whether it would use a modded version of Android, as on its Kindle Fire tablets, or opt for a different operating system altogether.

Claims that five Google Nexus-branded phones are in the works for simultaneous release later this year got a fresh layer of credibility today, setting the scene for a smartphone battle royale in the closing months of 2012.

According to last week’s report from Talk Android, the five devices will be manufactured by Google’s five key Android partners, namely: Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG and Sony.

All handsets will purportedly feature the unadulterated, vanilla version of Android for which the Nexus brand is known and will showcase the forthcoming Jelly Bean OS iteration.

Today, more details have emerged of Google’s plans. An insider familiar with matters down at Mountain View claims that the phones will drop on November 5th - a date that marks five years since the Android platform was unveiled.

Should the site’s information prove correct, it would set up a cut-throat battle with the iPhone 5, which is scheduled for launch in October, for market share in the final quarter of the year.

Opening up the Nexus brand to multiple manufacturers would also mark a sea change in Google’s approach to the Nexus range.

Previously Google has brought only one Nexus device to market per year, with manufacturing duty granted to a single preferred partner.

The shift is thought to be partly aimed at cutting down on the fragmentation problems that have plagued Android from very early on. These have been caused largely by manufacturers’ custom skins which have created delays when phone makers’ attempt to update handsets to newer versions of the OS.

Crafty hackers have cobbled together a version of Google’s newly release Android 4.4 KitKat for 2010’s Nexus One and its successor, the Nexus S.

The Big G has only released the new operating system for its most recent Nexus devices, leaving owners of the Nexus One and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus stranded on older editions of the software.

However, members at XDA developers have created an unofficial update that works on the first Nexus handsets. Unfortunately, it’s lacking certain key functions, with no screen shot skills and issues with the camera.

Google has previously bragged about KitKat’s ability to work on older devices with RAM as low as 512MB. But despite the Nexus One having precisely that amount of RAM, the search giant has decided against offering an official bump.

KitKat’s rollout has begun to gather pace, with HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 owners due to get the update in early 2014.

Nenu Pinnii(Telugu dengudu kathalu)

Samsung’s Android 4.4 update schedule for its current-gen and previous-gen flagship phones has leaked online, with the first handsets set to get on board early next year. `

According to what we’re told is an internal memo sourced by iTech Addict, the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 are in line for a bump to the latest KitKat version of Android at some time during January.

If you’re still rocking a Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note, you’re looking at a much longer wait, though. Samsung doesn’t intend to start rolling out Android 4.4 to these kits until March or April.

Before you get too excited about the upgrade, it’s worth mentioning that these dates most likely apply solely to Galaxy handsets bought off-contract and SIM-free.

Those of you who bought your Galaxy smartphone on a monthly contract will probably have to sit on your hands a while longer while your carrier performs tests on the new software. And ensures that KitKat works with whatever bloatware they’ve squirreled away on your slab of cellular joy.

As well as a rethought dialler and redesigned icons, KitKat brings with it an all-new Hangouts app, with SMS integration, and various, non-specific performance optimisations.

Nokia vice president Bryan Biniak has issued a barely concealed attack on Microsoft, saying it needs to work harder on getting the best apps onto Windows Phone if it wants to sell more smartphones.

In an interview with IBTimes, Biniak said: “We are releasing new devices frequently and for every new device, if there is an app that somebody cares about that's not there that's a missed opportunity of a sale.

"We are trying to evolve the cultural thinking [at Microsoft] to say 'time is of the essence.' Waiting until the end of your fiscal year when you need to close your targets doesn't do us any good when I have phones to sell today."

Biniak went on to add: “It's not just about the hardware, it's about the tools that are on the hardware. You can't sell a phone without the apps, you just can't."

Nokia is certainly not lacking when it comes to hardware. Its new 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 has been widely heralded as one of the best camera phones ever.

But with Microsoft offering a mere 165,000 smartphone apps compared to Apple’s 900,000 and Google’s millions, it seems Espoo may continue to struggle to compete.

Rent house 08-09(Telugu Boothu kadhalu)

Nokia is readying a new NFC and Bluetooth-packing accessory that it reckons will stop you from ever losing your keys again.

Dubbed Treasure Tag, the small device will work with Espoo’s Lumia smartphones. Word is that it’ll pair with a specially designed app, which will allow you to see exactly where the tag is at any given time.
The small, stamp-sized device comes with a special loop so it can be attached to a set of keys or a bag.

What’s more, it’ll play nice with Nokia’s LiveSight mapping platform, allowing you to see where it is whenever you fire up your handset’s maps app.

You’ll even be able to use it to find your phone if it’s lost, by simply pressing down a dedicated button which will make the phone beep if in range.

Rumour is the Nokia Treasure Tag will be out ‘in the coming weeks’. Hopefully it can help to chivvy along sales of the new Lumia 1020.

Apple made history this week by announcing not one but two new iPhones. But which one is right for you?

We've put together a list of the main differences between them, so you can decide which to make room for in your pocket.

 Price

The 5c was rumoured to be a budget iPhone, but that turned out to be off the mark.

It'll set you back £469 SIM-free, or starting at £30 on contract (though you'll have to shell out £32 a month for two years). And that's the more affordable of the two new additions to the iPhone range.
The 5s costs from £549, though it'll be much cheaper on a contract.

Exactly how much cheaper we don't know yet, as you can't pre-order the 5s. But either way, these are the most expensive iPhones ever.

One of the major differences between the two is the fact that the 5s has a fingerprint scanner built into the home button.

Not only does this make the device more secure, as you're not using a PIN code, it also makes it much easier to buy things from iTunes.

Fed up of entering your Apple ID every time you download a song? You won't have to with this, just touch your finger and you're done.

The 5c features nothing of the sort, as it's basically a restyled iPhone 5. Which brings us onto…
The 5c is the brightest iPhone ever, coming in a selection of five colours: green, blue, yellow, pink and white. There are optional cases available in those same hues, giving you dozens of potential colour combinations.

The iPhone 5s is a lot more sober, but still comes in more colours than its predecessor. You'll be able to get the 5s in champagne gold, silver, and space grey.

It too has a selection of official cases, but these ones are leather, compared to the 5c's silicone ones. The 5s's case comes in brown, beige, black, yellow, blue, or red.

The iPhone 5c has the same camera as the iPhone 5, but the 5s has tons of new imaging skills. The sensor is 15 per cent larger, which should improve picture quality.

There's a wider f/2.2 aperture, letting in more light, which should improve the quality of your low-light shots.

Burst mode takes lots of snaps at once and automatically picks the best, or you can browse them and choose another.

You can now shoot video in slow motion, too.

Nokia has so far ruled the roost when it comes to imaging on a smartphone, but the 5s could well unseat it.
he iPhone 5s features a whole new chipset. The A7 processor replaces the iPhone 5's A6, and should run twice as fast. (The 5c is still stuck with the A6, so may seem a bit sluggish in comparison.)

The A7 should also mean much better graphics in games. But not only that, the 5s also features a new M7 motion coprocessor.

This brings together all the data from the 5s's compass, accelerometer, and gyro motion sensors so it knows exactly how you're moving.

That could pave the way for a whole new generation of fitness tracker apps, which the 5c will miss out on.
