Apple’s iOS 8 is now installed on 63% of all iPhones and iPads, with adoption rates jumping as the company gets to grips with a series of bugs and issues with its mobile operating system.

According to official figures released via Apple’s developer pages, the number of iPhones and tablets running iOS 8 rose by 7% from November. iOS 7 has dropped to just 33% of devices, while just 4% are using older editions of the software.

The latest adoption numbers come as [Apple releases iOS 8.1.2](/mobiles/news/2014/12/applereleasesios81_2/(), its latest build of the software, designed to tweak the platform and fix a number of small bugs, including lost ringtones.

Growing adoption will doubtless please Apple as it looks to release iOS 8.2 in the new year, which includes its WatchKit software development kit for the forthcoming Apple Watch.

That major update could come as soon as February if some rumours are to be believed.

iOS 8’s widespread adoption also throws into sharp contrast Google’s struggles with Android fragmentation.

Its operating system is now spread over a series of versions, with the latest, Lollipop, on fewer than 0.1% of devices despite being out over a month.

Images of what some claim is the frame for the next iPhone are doing the rounds online, officially marking the start of leaked-photo season for the eighth-generation Apple smartphone.

Sourced by Chinese site CTech and published first in The West by 9to5 Mac, the snaps depict what does indeed look like a very thin frame. That’s in line with existing speculation that the handset could come in at just 6mm thick and will be aptly marketed as the iPhone Air.

It’s also been noted that whatever it is we’re looking at appears rather longer than previous frames for iPhones. Naturally, that’s sparked excitable talk that this could be the year we finally get the much-rumoured iPhone phablet. But before things get too febrile, it’s worth noting that although CTech has hosted some legit leaks in the past, this snap is surely rather too blurry and indistinct to read very much into.

Whispers of a larger iPhone with a display that approaches the expansive dimensions of bigger Android phones was rife even before the arrival of the iPhone 5S last year.

To the disappointment of a large proportion of tech fans, in the event Apple opted to retain the iPhone 5’s four-inch screen instead.

Rumours around a super-slim model only surfaced recently. But assuming the putative 6mm dimensions are correct, the iPhone Air could come in at half as thick as the iPhone 3GS and a full 1.7mm thinner than the 5S.

BlackBerry’s (nee RIM) claim that it is struggling to fulfil massive demand for the first-ever BlackBerry 10 smartphone has been called into question by informal testimonies from UK retailers, in an early sign that the warm reception afforded the handset may not be enough to save the beleaguered phone-maker.

Billed as a make-or-break device by tech watchers and business bods alike, the BlackBerry Z10 hit retail last week in the UK and is set to go on sale worldwide over the next month
.

Within days of its UK street date, Thorstein Heins, BlackBerry CEO, claimed that sales of the smartphone were “beyond expectations" and that the white model had already sold out. Demand for the black edition of the handset is also strong, with the result that BlackBerry was struggling to service demand, Heins told an interviewer.

So all’s well in the BlackBerry bush and its shareholders can rest easy? Hmm. Don't be so sure. If retailers questioned by news sites are anything to go by, the prognosis for the one-time mavens of mobile messaging is much less rosy.

According to Phones 4U, which was contacted by the Telegraph, there are still “plenty” of BlackBerry Z10 kits in their inventory. Meanwhile, Mobile News got in touch with the same retailer and was told that the white model was also still easy to come by.
Heins’ cheerleading on behalf of his company’s new challenger, while not surprising, could emerge as something of an own goal for BlackBerry, making the company seem desperate to put a positive spin on Z10 coverage.

But with the Q10, which sports a keyboard to appeal to BlackBerry phones' core market of heavy messagers, due to land later this year, we think you'd be a fool to write off the company's comeback chances just yet.

Crafty hackers have cobbled together a version of Google’s newly release Android 4.4 KitKat for 2010’s Nexus One and its successor, the Nexus S.

The Big G has only released the new operating system for its most recent Nexus devices, leaving owners of the Nexus One and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus stranded on older editions of the software.

However, members at XDA developers have created an unofficial update that works on the first Nexus handsets. Unfortunately, it’s lacking certain key functions, with no screen shot skills and issues with the camera.

Google has previously bragged about KitKat’s ability to work on older devices with RAM as low as 512MB. But despite the Nexus One having precisely that amount of RAM, the search giant has decided against offering an official bump.

KitKat’s rollout has begun to gather pace, with HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 owners due to get the update in early 2014.

Nenu Pinnii(Telugu dengudu kathalu)

Samsung’s Android 4.4 update schedule for its current-gen and previous-gen flagship phones has leaked online, with the first handsets set to get on board early next year. `

According to what we’re told is an internal memo sourced by iTech Addict, the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 are in line for a bump to the latest KitKat version of Android at some time during January.

If you’re still rocking a Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note, you’re looking at a much longer wait, though. Samsung doesn’t intend to start rolling out Android 4.4 to these kits until March or April.

Before you get too excited about the upgrade, it’s worth mentioning that these dates most likely apply solely to Galaxy handsets bought off-contract and SIM-free.

Those of you who bought your Galaxy smartphone on a monthly contract will probably have to sit on your hands a while longer while your carrier performs tests on the new software. And ensures that KitKat works with whatever bloatware they’ve squirreled away on your slab of cellular joy.

As well as a rethought dialler and redesigned icons, KitKat brings with it an all-new Hangouts app, with SMS integration, and various, non-specific performance optimisations.

. You are required to take your car to the repair shop your insurance company prefers. Although your insurance agency will probably recommend a repair shop (and the shop may be in their network), you can take your car anywhere you like. Even if the insurance company insists, you have the right to choose your own repair shop. In fact, you might want to refrain from using the recommended shop because if they're collaborating with your insurance company and lowering their prices, they may not give you a high-quality repair job.

2. Multiple estimates are required after an accident. By law, you are only required to get one estimate. If you want to get multiple appraisals, that's fine too.

3. The insurance company and repair shop may not agree on a price. If they don't and the insurance estimate is lower than the cost of repairs, you must pay the difference. Your insurance agency and repair shop should agree on a fair price. If you choose well, your repair shop will advocate for you and provide evidence of all the damage sustained. Collision insurance coverage should cover the entire cost of the damage. You should not pay anything but the deductible.

4. You must use the repair shop with the lowest bid. As I've noted already, you can choose whichever repair shop you like and you don't have to get more than one bid. Your insurance agency may push you to go with the lowest estimate, but you should choose the repair shop based on their knowledge, expertise, and customer service, not their low price. Low bidders rarely have the best service.

5. After your insurance company writes you a check, any additional costs must be paid by you. The insurance company should pay for everything (except for the deductible). The estimate was only an estimate and if additional repairs are needed, your insurance company should send you another check.

If you are just starting out or trying to build your automotive repair business's reputation, you may not know exactly where to begin. The automotive repair business is very competitive and it is easy to go unnoticed among bigger, more well-known brand name businesses. There are a few things you can do to earn a solid reputation in your area and get customer's to notice your business.

Keep continuing your education. Every year, vehicles are updated continuously. Unless you own a specialty shop that only works with antique cars, you need to keep up-to-date with your knowledge of newer cars. You should have a certain amount of money set aside to continue your education and help your mechanics stay on top of the market.

Hire only certified mechanics to work in your garage. When your mechanics know how to work on a variety of cars and are certified, more customers will be drawn to your business. They will develop the trust that is necessary to have customers willing to come back to your repair shop whenever their car needs a minor inspection or something more intensive.

It is very important to keep your garage looking neat and clean. It can be easy to neglect the garage because things will become dirty easily. But you must keep this area clean for safety reasons and for your company image. Customers like to see that the shop is well taken care of and will feel more at ease about your mechanics getting in and out of their cars. No one wants oil and grease tracked into their cars, so make sure your mechanics take necessary precautions to avoid this.

Don't neglect the lobby or the customers. Sometimes customers have to wait for a long time in the lobby while their vehicles are repaired. Your lobby should be clean, inviting, and have something for the customers to do. A vending machine for snacks, magazines, and a TV are essential when trying to keep customers from becoming impatient. Make sure your lobby furniture is comfortable and clean.

You should also keep the customers informed of what is happening with their vehicle and the progress on the repair. A long wait is hard, but a long wait without knowing what is happening and how much longer the repairs may take is even harder. Keeping the customers informed shows that you respect them and want to keep them involved.

When you are involved with your community, you bring awareness to your business. Keep a collection for a local charity in your lobby, organize an employee volunteer day, or donate some of your services to organizations or people in need. Giving back to the community in small ways can benefit your business in the long term.

Market your business in the media. Don't forget to take your advertisements to social networking sites. Create a website for your repair business to advertise what you do, and people will become more aware of your brand. Many people today don't even glance in their phone books when they need a service; they search for it online.

Always stay professional. Make and stick to your financial budget, make sure you have enough liability and industry-specific insurance, and always treat the customer with respect. Take care of your employees and you will build a great reputation with the public and those who work for you.

It’s an open secret that Apple’s new iPhone(s) will be launching late next month.

An operation that once resembled an airtight container is now more like a leaky sieve, with insider details, hidden code and nefariously gained components giving tech fanatics a clear idea of what to expect when Tim Cook takes to the stage.

Despite recent signs that sales of the iPhone have been slowing, thanks to increased Samsung domination and an ageing lineup, there’s no doubt that both the iPhone 5S/ iPhone 6 and budget iPhone 5C will sell like icepops on a hot day once they hit shelves.

That’s why it’s so worrying that Apple has just seen its iPhone activation servers go down for the second time in as many weeks.

Coupled with the hacking of its developer site, Cupertino is struggling with problems it can ill afford in the run up to its busiest time of the year.

The very best parts of Note phablets are arguably even better on the Note 8.0. Not least the excellent split screen, dual-app multi-tasking mode, which is much more practical on a display this size. Although we have deduced points for the fact that this feature is only supported by a limited number of apps.

The stylus makes more sense on the larger screen too, which is why we think you’ll make much more use of the S-PEN with this device than you might with its more pocketable forbears.

Apps created for the S-PEN that you’ll find pre-installed include S Note that lets you scribe and draw little memos and the S Planner diary tool. And to prove it’s not all work, work, work with the Note 8.0 there’s also Paper Artist that lets you work up convincing-looking pencil sketches.

That’s before you get to other proprietary apps. These take in Samsung Music Hub, Dropbox for cloud storage, video streaming app WatchON and, perhaps coolest of all, a built-in infra-red remote control.

As with the Galaxy S4, there’s a price to pay for all these pre-installed applications, though. They take up an awful lot of storage out of the box, with 10-11GB remaining on the entry-level 16GB model (this depends on your carrier) available to use. For that reason you may want to invest in a microSD card, with which you can boost capacity by up to 64GB.

Rounding things off is the Note 8.0's eight-megapixel camera which won’t win any awards, but is perfectly serviceable for most people’s needs.

NewsSpot was an impressive Google Reader app for our Windows Phone. In a few days though, Google Reader will be no more and changes were needed. Enter the version 3.1 update for NewsSpot which brings support for NewsBlur.

NewsBlur has gained in popularity since Google tanked its Reader and has a free account or a paid subscription that will run $24 annually.

Additionally, NewsSpot also supports switching between multiple sync accounts. You still have support for Pocket, Instapaper, Twitter, Facebook, Readability, and Evernote to share or bookmark your articles.

The developer does note that some of the advanced features of NewsBlur haven't been integrated into NewsSpot but are in the works. The target is to get functionality up to snuff sometime in July.

Additionally, look for future updates to bring service choices beyond NewsBlur to give users a choice of where they get news from. Choices that could include FeedBin, AOL Reader, and hopefully Feedly once the API is available.

NewsSpot is a sharp looking reader app for our Windows Phone (7.x and 8 devices) and bringing NewsBlur on board keeps things rolling. If you haven't tried NewsSpot, t here is a trial version available for NewsSpot that is ad-supported and lets you sync up to 200 unread and 50 starred articles. The full version is running $1.99 and can sync up to 2,000 unread or starred articles.
