Apple has unexpectedly rolled out the latest version of iOS 8, iOS 8.1.2, despite opting not to hand over the software to developers for pre-release testing.

The minor update is designed to fix a problem that has seen some users lose ringtones purchased via the iTunes store. Other generic bug fixes are included too.

With developers now busy working on iOS 8.2 and new WatchKit tools for the Apple Watch, it seems this update was deemed small enough not to need widespread stress testing.

Time will tell if that’s a wise move by a company that’s been dogged with complaints about iOS 8 since it landed.

iOS 8.2 is due for release in the new year to coincide with the launch of the aforementioned Apple Watch.

Apple is also said to already have iOS 8.3 in the works, reportedly designed for its long–awaited 12.2–inch iPad Pro and featuring split-screen multitasking for the tablet.

The launch comes after Apple revealed iOS 8 was now installed on 63% of all iOS devices.

Sony is rumoured to be already working on a new flagship phone, as it looks to build on the success of the four million-selling Xperia Z.

Unearthed by Chinese site ePrice, the handset, currently only known as ‘Honami’, is reportedly home to a five-inch full HD display, a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and a whopping 20-megapixel camera to outmatch just about any consumer-level DSLR out there.

The camera, which is inarguably the most standout spec of the lot, is said to feature a Cybershot CMOS sensor from Sony’s popular point-and-shoot range, along with a Carl Zeiss lens.

Elsewhere, the Honami is mooted to pack 2GB of RAM, a dedicated Walkman audio chip, a non-removable battery of up to 3,000mAh capacity and water and dust resistance capabilities just like the Xperia Z.

Meanwhile, a poster on Chinese forum Baidu who allegedly tests Sony Xperia handsets claims that the Honami will be ‘one of the most attractive phones Sony has ever made’ and bring all of Sony’s best technology in one place as part of a ‘One Sony’ branding initiative.

The unnamed tester also confirmed a leaked Sony ‘phablet’ from earlier this year.

Codenamed ‘Togari’, this allegedly rocks a 6.44-inch display with a 1080p resolution and a design similar to the Xperia Z with a glass back. Sadly, that’s about all we know about the handset so far.

Sony is hotly tipped to officially unveil both devices at the IFA expo in Berlin in September.

As always, we’ll bring you anything more we hear about them in the meantime.

O2 is offering the Sony Xperia Z smartphone for a cut price for a limited period, as part of its summer Flash Sale.

The waterproof smartphone is up for grabs in black or purple at £27 per month, under the terms of the promotion which is set to end June 12th.

Sony's schism with long-time partner Ericsson in 2011 was long overdue. But proof it has paid dividends arrived today with the announcement of record breaking sales for what many see as the first true Sony devices.

Speaking at today's press event, the Sony Mobile UK managing director Pierre Perron, who was in justifiably bullish mood, the Xperia Z and its slate stablemate Xperia Z are the fastest selling smartphone and tablet respectively in Sony's history.

The strong showing for the Xperia Z handset has enabled Sony to become the UK's third largest company by value of market share, claims Perron.

Before the Xperia Z, which was the best reviewed Sony phone for ages, and the split with Ericsson, Sony phones were frequently lambasted in the tech press for their weak build quality and shonky, fussy and unwieldy take on Android.

Along with Sony's first bona-fide Galaxy Note-challenger, today's press event also saw the unveiling of a new battery for Sony smartphones, dubbed Sony smart Stamina.

The 3000mAh cell features a long life cycle and a stamina mode that purportedly quadruples standby time.

Sony has officially raised the curtain on the Xperia Z Ultra, the latest addition to the Xperia family that’s set to take on Samsung and Apple at the smartphone summit.

Announced today at an intimate press gathering at the Blvgari Hotel in London, the Xperia Z Ultra – or the ZU as it’s also known – is home to a 6.4-inch full HD ‘Triluminous’ display featuring Sony’s latest ‘X-Reality’ video processing technology that fixes and replaces missing pixels in the picture on the fly to offer a silky smooth viewing experience.

This is made better by the screen’s ability to recognise inputs from stylus or even a pen or pencil, making it a direct challenger to Samsung’s hugely successful Galaxy Note range.

Powering the Z Ultra is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, which numerous benchmark tests have already proven to be faster than any smartphone currently in the market.

At the back of the ZU sits an eight-megapixel Exmor RS camera with HDR support for both photos and videos. This is teamed with a front-facing two-megapixel camera for video calling in HD.

On the connectivity front, there’s also NFC support with one-touch functions for instant connecting to other NFC-enabled devices such as speakers or televisions. Also on board is a magnetic charging port that will allow the device to be charged with a compatible charging dock or cradle without needing a special back cover.

Elsewhere, the ZU packs a 3,00mAh battery, along with a ‘Stamina’ mode, which Sony claims will allow the device to last at least two days of regular use on a full charge.

All this and more are crammed into an ultra-slim profile that measures just 6.5mm thin and weighs a none-to-shabby 212 grams, making it supremely easy to carry despite its immense size.

Better yet, just like the Xperia Z, the Z Ultra is also dust and water proof –certified IP55 and IP58 – and even features a waterproof 3.5mm headset jack.

Commenting on the launch, Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, said: “The Z Ultra's premium looks and slick design could win over quite a few consumers, but the allimportant network price points will dictate whether Sony's comeback can continue unabated.

“Delivering the sizable 'phablet' form factor favoured by Samsung, the 6.4-inch screen of the Z Ultra certainly caters to the 'all-in-one' desires of those looking for a powerful and complete tablet experience, without compromising on the traditional calls and messaging that a smartphone provides."

The Xperia Z Ultra will be available in midnight black, snow white and purple colourways. As an incentive for early adopters, Sony’s throwing in £21 worth of downloadable content (music, movies and games) from its range of entertainment services.

The Xperia Z Ultra will be available globally from Q3 2013. Pricing is still under wraps but as soon as we learn more, we’ll be sure to bring you the gen. So stay tuned!

It’s an open secret that Apple’s new iPhone(s) will be launching late next month.

An operation that once resembled an airtight container is now more like a leaky sieve, with insider details, hidden code and nefariously gained components giving tech fanatics a clear idea of what to expect when Tim Cook takes to the stage.

Despite recent signs that sales of the iPhone have been slowing, thanks to increased Samsung domination and an ageing lineup, there’s no doubt that both the iPhone 5S/ iPhone 6 and budget iPhone 5C will sell like icepops on a hot day once they hit shelves.

That’s why it’s so worrying that Apple has just seen its iPhone activation servers go down for the second time in as many weeks.

Coupled with the hacking of its developer site, Cupertino is struggling with problems it can ill afford in the run up to its busiest time of the year.

blurrycam photo of what we’re led to believe is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is doing the rounds in the tech press today, ahead of its anticipated arrival later this year.

Dug out of the web ether by Twitter user @PunkPanda, it’s hard to make out too much about the handset from the close-up of the screen that we’re presented with. But it’s still possible to discern the curved, ostensibly nature-inspired, edges that are the hallmark of top-end Galaxy kits.

It’s also noticeable that the rounded edges are in stark contrast to other purported leaked photos of prototype editions of the Note 3, which featured a sharper, more angular design.

According to the source of the leak, the handset packs a six-inch screen, with the display taking up 84 per cent of the fascia. That’s in line with previous rumours about the phone’s dimensions.

Evidence that an exceptionally expansive screen will be on board also appears to be corroborated by the noticeably small bezel around the phone’s display in the photo, as Samsung attempts to boost screen size without taking more space in your pocket.

Other putative specs for the device, at least if the rumour mill is anything to go by, take in an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 13-megapixel camera and version 4.2.2 of Android out of the box.

Zombie HQ hit the Windows Phone Store shelves last week and is from the developers of Dredd vs. Zombies and Guns 4-Hire. Zombie HQ is a Windows Phone 8 game where you play the role of a zombie apocalypse survivor determined to save your city from the living dead.

As you work to reclaim your city, you work towards rescuing other survivors, discover bigger and badder guns, and collecting a few bucks that can be used to upgrade your arsenal and buy furniture and apparel to customize your characters and headquarters.

Graphics have that distinctive undead feel, game play challenging and overall Zombie HQ is a nifty addition to the Zombie aisle of our Windows Phone gaming library.

When you first jump into the game you'll have to choose your characters gender. From there you get to view a movie trailer (that can be skipped) and run through a tutorial where you get to blast zombies as you learn the gaming controls.

Look, we're as excited as you guys when headlines pop up across the Internet stating that the Lumia 925 has a notification light and the Windows logo flashes in the attempt to grab the owner's attention, but we're not convinced. And neither is Nokia (seriously, we've asked numerous times). That said, we've previously seen in person this blinking Windows capacitive key back when the Lumia 925 was announced (alongside the Lumia 928), but we were informed that it's simply related to debugging (basically the current power-state, blinking was a low-cycle).

We've not noticed any flashing lights on our Lumia 925 unit either, unless you're speaking about the proximity sensor. No matter which setting we attempted to manipulate, no matter how many times we requested friends to send across photos, SMS, emails and more, we just couldn't get the desired results. This was until today when we completely drained the battery and allowed the Windows Phone to shut down to wait until we located a power socket. When plugging the Lumia 925 in, we noticed the Windows logo started to flash.

What was the cause? We're not sure. As we speak, we're draining the device again to see what happens when we insert the USB cable. But it could well be that we're looking at the new way for a Windows Phone to alert the user that there's not enough charge to boot i.e. this is really a new GDR2 "feature", but since we have no other GDR2 phones, we can't compare.

This could be nothing, though. Nokia can't confirm anything for the time being, so we'll keep our eyes open for any details that may emerge and we will certainly reach out for confirmation on what we're looking at here (many have published footage of the flashing while the device is currently powered - yeah, we're scratching our heads).

We'll have to see what Microsoft has to say about a potential software update that enables such functionality. While we attempt to get some concrete details, if you own a Lumia 925

If you follow our Xbox Windows Phone editorial coverage, then you know I’ve often been critical of the Xbox certification process. Microsoft created a set of certification policies back in the Xbox 360’s early years that were intended to ensure the highest quality game releases and discourage the release of buggy games. These same policies were then extended wholesale to subsequent Xbox platforms, including Games for Windows Live (PC), Windows 8, and Windows Phone.

Problem is the aging and restrictive policies weren’t designed to reflect the changing nature of the games industry, and certainly not to account for the differences in development between consoles and platforms like Windows Phone. Modern game development isn’t about shipping a game and then trying not to ever update it. No, games these days (whether they have In-App Purchases or not) are updated continuously throughout their life spans.

Indie hits like Minecraft and top smartphone games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope would never have remained as relevant as they are without the constant stream of updates and support from their developers. And the Xbox certification policies dating back to 2005 have been nothing but an impediment towards that kind of support. BUT it turns out that Microsoft discreetly relaxed their policies towards updating games earlier this year – on the Xbox 360, at least.

Yet another render of the next iPhone is doing the rounds today, based on what we think we know about Apple's next handset.

Worked up by Giorgi Tedoradze and highlighted by Phones Review, the concept handset sticks fairly closely to the iPhone 5 template in the design stakes with just a tiny suggestion of HTC's unibody dream, the HTC One.

However, in place of the four-inch screen that features on Apple's current-gen kit, there's a 4.5-inch Retina display that means the handset veers into phablet territory.

Roaming fees in the EU will soon be no more, amid reports that concerted efforts are being made to “fast track” new regulations to prevent networks from charging extra for using mobiles in the continent.

According to The Telegraph, 27 European Commissioners have voted in Brussels in support of reforms to come into effect as early as July 1st 2014.

“They agreed that this time next year we will have got rid of these charges,” said a source in Brussels, adding that the European Commission is convinced that the market is too disjointed due to an oversaturation of mobile providers in EU member states, which is said to be harming fresh investments.

“There are around 100 operators in Europe and only four in the US. That’s not sustainable if we’re going to have a single market and investment. Europe has less 4G mobile broadband than Africa at the moment,” said the insider.

“Consolidation is not the aim. The aim is a single market, but if it means we get fewer, stronger operators, that’s good.”

With a unified market, British mobile operators will be able to target customers in the EU, and vice-versa. It is also expected to benefit businesses that operate across the EU.

However, to ensure networks aren’t badly affected by the loss of roaming revenues, provision will be made to streamline operating in the EU by synchronising national sales of airwaves.

This is a fantastic feature as it lets you do more with your time. You could make video call while checking out a presentation.
