The importance of the first semester of your senior year: Things that needs to happen at this crucial time

In the early fall of the senior year, you need to sit with your guidance counselor to finalize your list of schools that you will be applying to. You need to discuss with your guidance counselor/adviser the tests that you have taken and the tests that you will need to take. Hopefully, you have taken the SAT/ACT at least once in the spring of junior year. For some of you, you should have taken the SAT II (old achievement test) in the spring of your junior year also. Also, you should discuss the application procedures and go over letters of recommendation from your teachers and your guidance counselor in late September and early October.

You need to discuss the types of applications such as early action, early decision and rolling admission application. Most selective colleges and universities have their regular deadlines either January 1st or January 15th. You have to meet all of your deadlines for college applications, financial aid and scholarships.

It is extremely important that you stay on top of all of your financial aid applications and their deadlines. Keep in mind that you may get in to many colleges and universities but where you will attend school next year will depend on what you and your family can afford. Financial aid may be the most important piece in the college admissions process.
