Selling is a great career. Financially fulfilling, recognition from peers on a job well done, prizes for doing a good job and the list goes on. You can end up with a very flexible schedule and be able to do things many people only dream about.

But selling can also be one of the most depressing careers a person could ask for. Low or no sales, no money coming in, irate customers, clients who leave you and cancel their policies, you know what I am talking about. How do you survive the ups and downs that come with a selling career?

Let me offer some "food for thought" if you are serious about surviving in this path.

1) See this as a career, not just a job- when you view sales as a career you develop a long - term mentality. You may have to change the companies you work for and even the products. But you don't change what you do. Sales is sales. So you focus on helping customers achieve their financial goals through Insurance products.

2) See it as a business opportunity - when you have a job you go to work, do your job and go home. But when you have a business you work longer, think harder and constantly try to increase your bottom line while preserving your integrity (you don't become a thief to stay in business). A career in Insurance sales is no different. You have to put in time to think about your business. You have to identify what your business is and who is your customer (a Medicare Supplement customer is different from a single 25 year- old male looking for inexpensive insurance). You have to manage your activities to create income and monitor your expenses closely.

3) Create multiple streams of income - people who generate large sums of money always diversify. How many actors own a ton of real estate? How many businesses were started by people who already had a successful business? Use your wealth created through your sales career to invest in other income producing projects so that you can begin to enjoy multiple streams of income. It makes dealing with the sales ups and downs more bearable.

4) Set your own financial house in order - make sure you have adequate life, health and other insurance products in place on yourself. You must be a student of your own product. You must believe in the benefits owning insurance will have on your own life. Nothing is more tragic than an Insurance agent who passes away and had no insurance on himself.

5) Begin each day with an attitude adjustment - Start each day in the right frame of mind.Tell yourself that you are successful, you will see many new customers today and you will make a sale. Look forward to making money every day you go to work.

6) Get use to hearing the word "No" each day- this word comes with being in sales. Get use to it! Each no brings you closer to your yes. So love hearing it.
